About Work & Utility Lights
Work lights do a different job from flashlights. A flashlight points where you aim it; a work light stays where you put it and lights an area while you use both hands. Eighteen models here from Husky, Infinity X1, Duracell, Defiant and CAT, from a 200 lumen neck light to a 5,000 lumen portable job-site light.
Magnetic, hook, stand or worn?
How a light mounts matters more than how bright it is. Magnetic bases stick to any steel panel - the default for vehicle, under-hood and toolbox work. Hooks and carabiners hang a light from a bonnet catch, scaffold or tent pole. Folding stands and 360-degree bases aim a light across a floor or bench. Worn lights - the CAT neck light and headlamps - put the light with your eyes and travel with you.
Why neck lights beat headlamps for close work
A neck light sits below eye level on two flexible arms, so it does not throw the shadow of your own hands onto what you are working on. Under a dash, inside a panel or lying on your back, that is a real difference. A headlamp is better for walking and for looking at something across a room.
How bright for a work area?
For a bench or engine bay, 1,000 to 2,000 lumens is comfortable. For a whole garage bay or a roadside recovery scene, 3,000 to 5,000 lumens. Beyond that you are usually better adding a second light in a different position than adding output - two 2,000 lumen lights kill shadows that one 5,000 lumen light creates.
Colour temperature
Several models offer selectable colour temperature. Cool white shows contrast and detail and suits mechanical inspection. Warm white is easier on the eyes over a long session and better for campsites and living spaces. Neutral sits between the two and is the safest single choice.
Power bank and solar
Most rechargeable work lights here also output USB power to charge a phone, and the Infinity X1 3,000 lumen two-pack charges from its own solar panel - worth having where the light lives in a truck and rarely sees a mains socket.
Multi-packs
Many work lights ship in twos and threes. That is the right way to buy them: the practical problem on a job is never one light being dim, it is needing light from two directions at once.
