About Hunting Spotlights

Hunting after dark is a lighting problem before it is anything else. You need to find eyes at distance, identify what you are looking at with certainty, and do both without destroying your own night vision or announcing yourself to everything within half a mile. Eighteen products here cover handheld, vehicle-mounted and hands-free options.

Check your local regulations first

Rules on artificial light for hunting vary widely by state, county and species, and change. Spotlighting is legal for some species and prohibited for others, sometimes on the same ground on the same night. Confirm current regulations with your state wildlife agency before using any light in the field. We sell equipment; the legal responsibility for how it is used is the operator's.

How far do I need to see?

Beam distance, not lumens, is the number that matters. Predator calling over open ground typically wants 400 to 600 m of useful throw; woodland and close cover work needs far less and benefits from a wider beam. The Husky 2,500 lumen spotlight reaches 550 m, the Defiant 1,000 lumen compact reaches 450 m, and the 1,500 lumen Husky throws 350 m - note that the brighter light does not automatically reach further.

Why red light matters

Red light preserves your dark adaptation, so you can check a rifle, read a tag or find a call and still see into the dark immediately afterwards. It is also markedly less likely to spook game than white. Several models here include a dedicated red mode - the Husky 1,500 lumen spotlight and the Duracell 575 lumen COB headlamps among them.

Handheld, vehicle-mounted, or headlamp?

Handheld spotlights are the standard for scanning from a stand or a stationary vehicle - you sweep, then hold. Vehicle-mounted spotlights suit ranch and depredation work where you cover ground and need to aim from the driver's seat; see our vehicle spotlights. Headlamps are for everything that is not spotting - walking in, field dressing, following sign, packing out - and the right answer is usually to carry both.

Battery strategy for a long sit

Dual-power lights that take a rechargeable pack and fall back to AA or AAA cells are the safest choice for hunting. Cold drains lithium cells faster than the specification suggests, and a light that dies two hours into a sit ends the night. Carry spares.

Floating and weatherproof options

The Husky 2,500 lumen spotlight is IPX7 and floats - worth having for flooded timber, marsh and boat-based work where a dropped light is otherwise a lost light.
