About Unity X-LED Spotlights

Unity's X-LED series is the modern replacement for the 100 W halogen head that defined the company's spotlights for eighty years. It fits the same mounts, uses the same bracket kits, and is aimed the same way - what changes is everything electrical.

X-LED vs halogen: the real differences

Lamp life. LED emitters are rated around 50,000 hours. A halogen bulb is rated in hundreds. Over a fleet, that is the difference between never touching the lamp and re-bulbing on a schedule.

Current draw. An LED head pulls a fraction of the amps a halogen does. On a vehicle already carrying radios, lightbars and laptops, that headroom matters - and it means the light can run at idle without concern.

Start-up. LED is instant to full output. Halogen ramps, and in cold weather it ramps slowly. When the light is needed for identification, that delay is the whole point.

Beam colour. LED produces a crisp white beam with better colour rendering, which makes it easier to read plates, house numbers and clothing. Halogen is warmer and yellower.

Heat. A halogen head gets hot enough to be a burn hazard and stresses the lens and gasket over time. LED runs cool.

Can I upgrade an existing halogen spotlight?

In most cases the sensible route is to fit an X-LED head to the existing bracket and handle rather than to convert the old head. The bracket kit, shaft and handle carry over, so the cost of upgrading a working installation is the lamp assembly alone. Send us your existing model number and we will confirm what carries over.

Why halogen is still sold

Two reasons: lower purchase price, and parts commonality for fleets that already hold halogen spares and do not want to run two inventories. If neither applies to you, choose LED.
