Short answer: you replace the lamp assembly, not the installation. The vehicle-specific bracket kit, the shaft and the interior control handle all carry over, so an LED upgrade on a working spotlight costs the lamp and an hour of labour — no new hole in the A-pillar.
What actually changes?
| 330 halogen | X335 LED | |
|---|---|---|
| Power draw | 100 W | 30 W |
| Output | 245,000 cd | 225,000 cd |
| Rated lamp life | 100 hours | 50,000 hours |
| Beam | Wide-ish, warmer | 9° H x 9° V, precise |
You give up about 8 percent of peak intensity and gain a 70 percent cut in current draw plus a lamp that outlives the vehicle. On a car already carrying radios, a lightbar and a laptop, that current headroom is usually worth more than the candlepower.
Is the LED beam actually as good?
It is different, and for most work it is better. Each LED in the X335 has its own focused reflector, which produces a uniform 9° by 9° pattern rather than the hot centre and soft edge of a halogen reflector. The colour temperature is warmer than most vehicle LEDs, which reduces the glare-back you get off wet road and fog. The X335 meets the SAE J591 spotlamp standard.
What about the U-8547 LED lamp?
The U-8547 is the LED lamp package Unity supplies for retrofitting existing heads. Two service parts are specified with it and are worth ordering at the same time: the U-5548 curved gasket, which seals the base against the pillar, and the U-2028 lead wire assembly. Both are included in the U-8547 package and sold separately here as replacements.
Do I need a new handle?
Only if the old one is worn. The handle is a mechanical assembly — grip, friction collar and seal — and has nothing to do with the lamp. If the spotlight still holds its aim over a rough road, keep it. If it drifts, the friction collar is worn and this is the natural moment to fit a new handle assembly, since the head is already off.
Is it worth it on an older vehicle?
If the vehicle has three or more years left, yes. The halogen's 100-hour rating means a working patrol car re-lamps on a schedule; the LED does not. If the vehicle is near the end of its life, a better plan is to keep it on halogen and move the X-LED head onto the replacement vehicle, buying only the new bracket kit.
