If you've spent more than five minutes on Unity's website trying to figure out the difference between the X335A and X335CL, you're not alone. The names are similar, the specs look identical, and the price difference is minimal. But the distinction matters — order the wrong one and your spotlight won't mount correctly on your vehicle.
The Specs Are (Almost) Identical
Both the X335A and X335CL are:
- 6-inch diameter X-LED post-mount spotlights
- 225,000 candlepower, 9° × 9° spot beam
- 30 watts, 12V DC
- 360° continuous horizontal rotation, 120° vertical adjustment
- 50,000-hour LED lamp life
- SAE J591 compliant
- GORE-TEX® vented head assembly
- UV hard-coated polycarbonate replaceable lens
On paper, these are the same light. In practice, the differences are finish and shaft geometry.
The Actual Difference: Shaft Code and Finish
The letter at the end of the model number is the shaft code — A for the X335A, CL for the X335CL. The shaft is the post that runs through your A-pillar and determines how the spotlight sits against the exterior of your vehicle. Different vehicles require different shaft lengths for the light to sit flush and seal correctly.
X335A (Chrome): A-shaft. Chrome PC/ABS housing. Exposed shaft length approximately 6½ inches, center-to-center 12 inches. Fits vehicles that require an A-length shaft — check Unity's Application Search to confirm your vehicle.
X335CL (Black): CL-shaft. Black PC/ABS housing. Different shaft dimensions for vehicles that require the CL-length. The black finish is the version most commonly specified for law enforcement stealth builds and newer patrol platform vehicles.
Chrome or Black — Does It Matter?
Beyond shaft length, the finish choice comes down to application and preference:
Choose chrome (X335A) if: You're replacing an existing chrome spotlight and want consistent appearance. You operate a ranch or utility vehicle where chrome finish isn't a concern. Your vehicle has trim or exterior elements in chrome.
Choose black (X335CL) if: You're building a stealth or unmarked patrol vehicle. Your vehicle's exterior trim is matte or black. Your agency specifies black-finish equipment. You simply prefer the look of black on a dark-colored vehicle.
Neither finish affects light output, durability, or warranty coverage. This is purely a visual and vehicle-compatibility decision.
How to Know Which One Your Vehicle Needs
The definitive answer is Unity's Application Search tool at unityusa.com. Enter your vehicle's year, make and model — the tool returns the correct spotlight model and installation kit for your specific platform.
The installation kit is sold separately from the spotlight head and is also vehicle-specific. It includes the mounting bracket, gasket, fasteners, drill bushing, locating template and installation instructions. Don't order the spotlight head without confirming the correct installation kit at the same time.
Price Difference
The X335A (chrome) lists at $489.86 and the X335CL (black) at $469.86 — a $20 difference that reflects minor manufacturing variation, not performance difference. Buy the one that fits your vehicle, not the one that's slightly cheaper.
Quick Reference
Same: LED output · candlepower · beam angle · rotation range · warranty · lamp life
Different: Shaft code (A vs CL) · finish (chrome vs black) · vehicle compatibility
